18) Apex 130 Results

Spearo: Ritchie Zacker | Species: Grouper
Common names: Bass, Rockcod

This past week we have had some of the best weather this year and I took advantage of it and took out the 130 to put it to the test back to back days. The first day I had to get the hang of it but towards the end of the day I had it dialed in. Shot some nice fish but nothing to write home about. Well the second day turned out to be a great day. Shot lots of nice fish but I got two really big gag grouper for inshore and this time of year. These fish are two really nice one's anytime of the year. The water has been top to bottom viz and the fish rather spooky. I really got to put the gun to the test and was not dissapointed at all (and have yet to be). Drilled these to big gag's at long shots and right at where I aimed. Right in the back of the head. I hope you can use this picture and should have alot more coming soon. Ritchie

| Species: Rabitech Apex Carbon 130
Common names:

"DAMN I'M SO PUMPED. WE'RE GONNA KILL 'EM" I keep telling myself. Unable to sleep I get some fast food, it's only midnight and I have six hours to get to Camarillo, a 2 hour drive from my house. I eat my greasy fries, quesadilla, and big fat chicken taco that is nothing more than a fat pita with an ounce of chicken...pack my 100cm stealth and 130cm apex and I'm ready to roll. I put a double wrap on my guns just before as I hear it shoots quite nice like this. I rarely sleep and under normal circumstances, would be perfectly fine. But I need my rest for a long day out at sea, and one hour just isn't going to cut it, or is it? I'll worry about that later. I get to Tommy's house by 4 and catch an hour's nap in my car before I wake up to see his house lights go on. HAH. He must not be able to sleep either! It was six o clock now and I saw him doing some work in his front yard before we went. I woke up...well I suppose I woke up before I saw him doing some work, but I'm in such a daze I forget the exact order. This was my first time meeting Tommy other than on spearboard and he was very amiable and I was even MORE PUMPED that it would be a fun trip. (My vocabulary is limited despite being an English Major). 6:15 ~We meet his friend Jeff and headed over to the harbor to meet another one of Tommy's friends: Eric--the owner of a premier dive boat in our area, the Peace. After looking at the tides and hit a spot over a Santa Cruz Island. Held off on some large barracuda but on my way back in I shot a calico bass for target practice and just to warm up some stalking technique for the day to come. uh oh..10 am and i'm...PASSED THE F*** OUT!!!! THUMP THUMP. What the hell was that? I look from the cabin window. AHHHH BIG WSB ON THE DECK!!! I suited up. Those CBass have me pumped up again--Sleep is for the weak i tell myself!! I traveled about 1/4 mile and shot me one . I had my homemade floatline (280lb spectra, 5/16ID 7/16OD vinyl tubing) attached to my gun's tuna clip on the handle (no breakaway) and played the fish in this manner. I was pulled under twice but was able to breathe up, weave in and out of kelp to find where the fish had taken all my mono, and brained it. Floatlines in kelp are not all that bad afterall. I think I would prefer it to a reel, as Tommy's experience today would show. He shot a fish that tied up pretty deep and spent close to an hour getting it due to all the tangles from the reel. But it turned out to be a nice WSB!! By this time Tommy/Eric had their limits and I was content with one fish. There were none at the first spot, and I was asleep for the second spot!! The third spot, swam for 20 minutes before shooting one and I was feeling good, albeit tired. After his hour long battle with a big boy, he asked if we wanted to continue to fish. I really didn't mean anything by keeping my wetsuit on but Jeff had taken his off as he was a little disappointed he didn't see too many fish. But we did some "lumming", spotted a few 10-15 lbers from the surface and decided it was a go. I didn't need anymore fish but I wanted to dive a bit more with my WSB friends. Shot another one that fought a little and took two dives to first a) find, then b) retrieve. Coming into those kelp rooms were so nice, no red tide or other crap in your mouth. A stone shot opportunity on a 30#er but wanted to look for bigger. I made a few more dives and there were two visible small fish. They were booking it with their backs facing me. I never tried a double wrap on my gun but decided to test it there. On the edge of vis I took a 25 ft shot that knicked him in the tail, out of the tail, into the face, then out of the face. I didn't know I had caught him because there was absolutely NO FIGHT. Felt like the smelt I catch...MMMM SMELT.. ;) I have the picture attached -- a small guy. Right then his mom and pops came up from below (45#ers easy) but I had my limit for the day and like ghosts, they were gone

66) First WSB of Season

Spearo: Erik Sun | Species: Atractoscion nobilis
Common names: White Seabass

"I had just finished painting my guns with a Camouflage design and it was now time to put it to the test! I drove down to Laguna Beach on Easter, put on my camo suit and with gun in hand, crossed Pacific Coast Highway, (which was loaded with the typical holiday traffic). It took me 10 minutes to get across the street! I hopped in, looked around, and spotted what I first thought to be a leopard shark. I soon realized it was a White Seabass as the beautiful yellow fins contrasted the shiny silvery body of the fish. The most prized fish in California! Its back was turned from me! Its back was turned from me...I waited, waited, waited, and BAM took the shot in the face as I like to right as it turned to ensure a holding one. Got out 15 minutes later!"

114) My first time with a Rabitech!

Spearo: Gary Fiala | Species: Atractoscion nobilis
Common names: White Seabass

I met ken at my boat slip at 7:00 a.m. on sat. we headed out to the north end of salt creek, to look for White Seabass. We dove for about 2 hours, vis was pretty poor in the kelp but at 40' the vis was about 12'+. I was breaking in my new Rabitech Apex 120 with the reel I just installed the night before. Took 2 sheephead 1 @ 5# and a second one @ 11#. Both shots were over 12' away, and both fish were stoned clean. We pulled achor and headed north to meet up with Prodigal son and Bluegill (from spearboard), dove with them for about 1.5 hours. It was really fun to hookup with those guys and look for more fish. Later we dropped them back at Woods cove. Around noon Ken and I headed south to Mateo Point to continue to look for WSB. On the way I break a prop. After a 10 min. repair stop were are on our way again.(thank goodness for spare props) Vis in the kelp was real crappy, 6-8' at best, It was really anoying because you could here the big toads "croaking", it sounded like they were right next to you, but we could'nt see them. After 10 min. of diving Ken yells out that he spotted one, but it took off into the murk instantly. After 2 hours of hunting between 25-50', I decided to head back to the boat, about 20' from the boat I had to dive under some kelp to get back, and I cant belive what I'm seeing, right in front of me I see a "tail" sticking out of the kelp, so I take a guess at the fishs location, and I pull the trigger. Instantly 50 meters of line gets ripped off of my real, I tighten the drag and then I get pulled under, I yell to Ken for help. For the next 15 min. I swear and prayed over and over again, and swim throught the kelp to unthread this thing. It wrapped line everywere, around every strand of kelp that was there. Finally after what seemed like a hour, I see my breakaway loop coming into view, and then, slowing comming into view from the murky deep finally I see it!!!. A "huge" WSB is attached to my shaft, very carefully I pull the line up till I grab the shaft, I was able to get my hand into the gills on the first try, immediatly I stone it, then I hugged it, and kissed it, and hugged it some more. Ken is loosing his mind, while the 2 of us try to get this thing onto the boat it was big, bulky and difficult to handle. We fianlly return to the docks where I was able weigh it. Ken was estimating it at 55 lbs. I was'nt so sure about it. 45 lbs was the official weight. Not a bad first day in the water with my new Rabitech gun. I have to say it really perfomed well, and is very accurate. This was the first big WSB I have taken, it was a experience I will never forget........ good hunting )<(((()'>

Both days the conditions were pristine, as can be seen in the attached photos. What a blessing. Hardly any waves, about mid tide, decent viz. Heres the catch: 12lb Omilu from Saturday morning. Was a strong fighter lotsa fun to hunt. I don't have a reel on my gun and didn't have my gun attached to the float. I almost lost the bigger one. It kept trying to swim down and at one time the tag line got temporarily snagged on the reef. I managed to catch a strong breathe and it was over for Omilu.

Spearo: Ritchie Zacker | Species: Rabitech Stealth Carbon 110
Common names:

We had an unusual break in the weather over here for the winter time. Flat calm seas and warm conditions but the water is a chilly 58 degress. I took advantage of this break and really tore them up. The picture attached is of what I shot for the day. Grouper, sheepshead and a few hogfish. The two grouper that I'm holding up are 17 and 18 pounds, all shot in 17 to 27 feet of water with the 110 C/F Stealth. I just can't say enough about how accurate that gun is. Everything was either a kill shot or hit in the head and so light in the water its scary.

Common names:

Once again this year I've had a another awesome win. This time it came at the St.Pete Open which is the worlds largest spearfishing tournament which had 310 shooters in it this year. I broke a 34 year old tournament record for sheepshead. The previous record was 9.13 lbs and I shot a 11.64 lb sheepshead which shattered the old record. A 2.51 lb jump. Thats huge for sheepshead. I shot and stoned it with my 110 and was pretty pumped.

167) State Tournament

Spearo: Ritchie Zacker | Species: Various
Common names: Used for multiple fish photo's

Well we were able to have our Florida State freediving tournament this past weekend. The conditions couldn't have been better, flat seas and top to bottom viz. We were working depths from 25 to 60 feet. I was able to close out my limit of 20 fish for my limit for the tournament and my stringer of fish consisted of 5 grouper, 5 snapper, 5 hogfish, 4 sheepshead and 1 triggerfish. I finished with a score of 97.8 points and a 4th place individual placing. If I could have found the one fish that I really needed (amberjack or cobia) I would've had a solid 2nd palce finishing, but just couldn't find one. Hey I still kicked butt with a stringer of reef fish and beat out guys that had an amberjack or cobia. I still can't say enough about that 110cm Stealth gun. It just plain ROCKS!!! I think that I had a kill shot rate of about 80%.
